It never ceases to amaze me how anyone could possibly dispute the health benefits of eating organically grown foods, which can generally be considered any produce grown without any pesticides and artificial fertilizers.
As it turns out, and as logic would dictate, organic foods may have more nutritional value than their conventionally-grown counterparts. Without pesticides and artificial fertilizers, crops are forced to make more of their own protective and growth inducing chemicals. That's why a comprehensive review of 97 published studies comparing the nutritional value of organic and conventional foods found that organically grown foods contain higher levels of 8 nutrients studied, including significantly greater concentrations of health-promoting polyphenols and antioxidants. And according to the Organic Consumers Association, the scientists who reviewed the data found that these organically grown foods were 25% more nutrient dense, delivering a lot more essential nutrients per calorie consumed.
Is organic worth the extra costs? Well, at the end of the day, consumers are going to have to make their own decisions, but given the likelihood of toxicity from conventional pesticide laden foods and the higher nutritional content of organic foods, it seems likely that staying away from synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals, and sticking to foods grown the old fashion way is a wiser and healthier choice.
