Most people know that proteins are made of amino acids. It's true that these molecules are linked together to form the body's 100,000 plus proteins, like beads on a necklace, but what's less recognized is some of these amino acids have interesting properties and can be taken as therapeutic agents on their own.
Two spectacularly valuable aminos act as stimulants and are nearly caffeine like. They have the ability to promote vitality and alertness. They are phenylalanine and its derivative tyrosine, and both are known for enhancing mood and motivation, as well as for their energizing effects. They are nearly equivalents, and can be used interchangeably, although phenylalanine does have some pain relieving properties that tyrosine doesn't.
If you want to take advantage of phenylalanine or tyrosine, try using 50 to 100 milligrams a day of one or the other instead of your morning coffee. Like caffeine, they both work as a great pick-me-up, but don't take too much. While they're non-toxic, also like caffeine, overdosing can cause jitteriness, anxiety or insomnia.
